BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said in a statement, “It is extremely important that the financial well-being of our former cricketers is taken care of. The players remain the lifeline and as a board, it is our duty to be by their side once their playing days are over. The umpires have been unsung heroes and the BCCI truly values their contribution.”The Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) welcomed the development, and expressed its “immense gratitude” to the BCCI.”The announcement by the BCCI yesterday has been very well received by our members, many of whom have benefitted with this move in these days of rising prices and falling interest income, all of which has become a world-wide phenomenon,” an ICA statement said. “That this 75 to 100 percent rise in pension comes on the back of the increase in medical reimbursement from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for those who have played 10 and more First-Class matches makes it even more welcome.”

£50m star has already decided whether he’ll join Arsenal in January

The January window is fast approaching for title-chasing Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, and a rumoured top transfer target has apparently already made a decision about joining Arsenal next month.

Arsenal beat Man United 2-0 as Arteta rediscovers best Premier League form

Following a very difficult period just before the latest international break, with Arsenal going from mid-October to mid-November without a single Premier League win, Arteta has now guided his side back to an imperious run of form.

Convincing wins over Nottingham Forest, Sporting Lisbon, West Ham and Man United have resurrected a sense of real positivity and belief that Arsenal are still in with a real chance of winning their first title in over two decades, with the north Londoners travelling to Craven Cottage for a face-off against mid-table Fulham on Sunday.

Arteta dealt Ruben Amorim his first loss as United boss earlier this week with a 2-0 win at the Emirates, courtesy of goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, as Arsenal continue to be a real menace from set-pieces.

Speaking in a post-match press conference after Arsenal’s victory over the Red Devils, Arteta hailed his team’s mental resilience to come back so strongly after their winless run.

“The will to win is there, they try, we try all our best to do that,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s 2-0 win over United.

“It’s true we went through a lot in that period, the schedule and the opposition that we played, a lot of things and that’s the thing you have to react. It’s about trying to do it next, today we have won four in a row but it doesn’t matter we have to go to Fulham now and be better than them to try to win the game. It’s every three days, it’s a crazy schedule, we’re going to need everybody and mentally be very strong because you’re going to have to go through those moments.”

The club could even strengthen their resolve further with new January additions, with reports suggesting that Arsenal are prepared to move for Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton as they contemplate life without out-of-contract duo Jorginho and Thomas Partey.

Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi decides whether he'll join Arsenal in January

According to The Boot Room, Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi remains on Arsenal’s radar as another top midfield target, despite failing to tempt him away from La Liga in the summer.

Former sporting director Edu Gaspar sealed a deal for his former teammate Mikel Merino instead, but there is a belief that Arsenal are reigniting their interest in Zubimendi for 2025.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi

However, they’ve been dealt bad news about a move for him in the winter, as it is believed that Zubimendi is planning to stay at Sociedad in January amid Arsenal’s interest in signing him.

Liverpool are also contenders for his signature, but the Spain international would actually prefer a move to Real Madrid over anybody else at the end of the season.

Zubimendi’s contract includes a £50 million release clause, so it appears the biggest obstacle to any move for the 25-year-old is his personal preference.

Forget Gundogan: Man City star who had 98% passing could be Pep's new Rodri

Manchester City found themselves in an unusual position heading into Wednesday night’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest, having unbelievably lost their four league clashes before going into the contest at the Etihad.

Thankfully for City supporters watching on, Pep Guardiola’s men breezed past Forest to silence a growing contingent of doubters, with an emphatic 3-0 scoreline just what the doctor ordered after a dismal stretch of recent results.

The relief written on everyone’s faces associated with the usual table-toppers at the full-time whistle was clear to see, as stars such as a silky Kevin De Bruyne shone brightly all night long.

Standout performers for City

It goes without saying that the Belgian attacking midfielder is one of the best talents in the Premier League when he’s at his eye-catching best and he certainly was at the very top of his game across the 3-0 victory.

De Bruyne would ensure that any nerves inside the Etihad would dissipate when he resoundingly fired home the second goal of the contest, after some tricky feet from his compatriot, Jeremy Doku found him in plenty of space to strike a fierce effort past a helpless Matz Sels.

Whilst the City captain showed off his class with that finish, Doku would also time after time show off his daringness on the ball to push his stuttering side on to a much-needed three points, with the tricky 5 foot 8 ace amassing a stunning six successful dribbles to constantly leave the visitors guessing.

There were also the likes of Bernando Silva, who scored early on to kickstart the positive display, alongside Erling Haaland who set up Doku’s decisive third goal.

But, it was the performance of Jack Grealish that rightfully won plaudits when the dust had settled on the comprehensive win, with the former Aston Villa gem excelling in a deeper role for his bruised side to soften the continued blow of Rodri still being sidelined.

Grealish's performance in numbers

Accused of playing “like a mannequin at times” by ex-City shot-stopper Shay Given when chucked out to the left wing, Guardiola gambled on the exciting talent to come good in a holding midfield spot this mid-week, and it more than paid off.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The City number ten would confidently spray the ball around the pitch across his 89 minutes, with Grealish exiting the field of play with a sublime 98% pass accuracy in-tact, alongside other glowing numbers.

That ability to keep things ticking in the centre of the park is akin to the absent Rodri, who averaged a 92% pass rate in the Premier League last season.

Jack Grealish

Looking at the graphic above, it was a well-rounded display from the England international, who offered the same energy as Rodri usually offers in spades with seven successful duels being won, alongside also showing off his comfortable nature joining in with attacks with two shots registered.

Grealish’s top showing in an unfamiliar position wouldn’t go unnoticed by Daily Express journalist Amos Murphy, who dished out a high 8/10 rating to the 29-year-old post-match, stating that he provided a ‘much-needed bounce’ centrally.

Struggling at times to find a position that has best suited him in Manchester, it could be that this tweak to play him alongside Ilkay Gundogan in a deep role is an ingenious one, with Guardiola also stating that the Birmingham-born star did “brilliantly” with what was asked of him.

With Rodri sidelined for the foreseeable, the Spaniard will hope he’s finally found an adequate short-term replacement for the Ballon D’Or winner in Grealish, rather than the ageing Gundogan, as fixtures continue to come full pelt this December in the Premier League.

Liverpool looking to sign Salah replacement who’s scored v City this season

Liverpool just about got over the line in the Premier League this Saturday as Arne Slot’s side showed grit and determination by the bucket load to overcome Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1.

Many of the passionate Reds supporters packed into Anfield must have been fearing the worst as the clock ticked down and Ferdi Kadioglu’s strike was the only moment of action separating the two sides, but the table-toppers found a way to clinch the three points via a quickfire Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah double.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Salah continues to prove his worth for Slot’s side, despite his future at the club still hanging in the balance regarding his contract winding down, as the 32-year-old bailed his team out of a disappointing result by once more delivering the goods.

Salah's form this season

Even as he finds himself deep into the twilight years of his playing days, the outstanding Egyptian is still managing to shine bright for his long-term employers, with seven goals notched up in Premier League action this season from ten clashes.

Mohamed Salah scores for Liverpool

Also amassing a very impressive five assists in the league – away from his expertise in firing home strike after strike – it was his unerring coolness under pressure in front of goal that sealed all three points against Fabian Hurzeler’s stubborn Seagulls, as Salah hammered home this effort after Liverpool had broke forward with devastating pace.

Now onto a jaw-dropping 220 goals and 96 assists at Anfield from 364 games, it is going to be a hell of a task for the powers that be at the Reds to adequately replace such a clinical icon if he does decide his time at the Premier League club is up next summer.

Consequently, with this anxiety hanging over proceedings, there must be many transfer targets in mind if Salah does exit the top-flight titans soon.

Liverpool looking at "unplayable" Salah replacement

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, AFC Bournemouth ace Antoine Semenyo is being looked at as one potential Salah successor, with Thomas stating that the Reds are being ‘prudent’ in terms of mapping out viable replacements for the 32-year-old.

Semenyo has kicked on even more for the Cherries this season after an encouraging 2023/24 showing, with four goals and one assist tallied up in the league for Andoni Iraola’s men so far, who very much had their star number 24 to thank for an excellent 2-1 win over Manchester City last time out.

The ex-Bristol City attacker tore Pep Guardiola’s visitors to shreds on the South Coast, registering an unbelievable six successful dribbles across the course of his lively 90 minutes, on top of opening the scoring after just nine minutes on the clock.

Liverpool would have equally basked in the glory of this result when it filtered through to the Anfield masses, with Semenyo now on the radar of many clubs such as Slot’s men owing to his electric performances this season to date, against some of the division’s very best outfits.

Labelled as “unplayable” on his day by football journalist Ed Aarons after a wonderful solo strike against Southampton at the back-end of September, Semenyo also possesses many of the traits and characteristics of Salah when on the pitch, bursting forward and causing all sorts of havoc with tricks and flicks for opposition defenders to try and keep tabs on.

Liverpool won’t be alone in this pursuit, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also named as parties looking at the breakout Cherries number 24, but Slot and Co could do far worse than going all in for Semenyo if Salah does decide enough is enough in England.

NCL Round-up: Salman Hossain carries Barisal to convincing win; Sunzamul bags ten in Rajshahi victory

Two rain-affected draws meant unbeaten Rangpur Division continue to remain atop the Tier-1 table

Mohammad Isam17-Nov-2021

Salman Hossain celebrates his second first-class century•Walton

The focus shifted to the Tier-2 matches in the National Cricket League this week after Barisal Division beat Dhaka Metropolis by seven wickets to get within less than two points of table-toppers Chattogram Division. Barisal were also helped in their hope for promotion as Rajshahi Division were victorious against Chattogram by 166 runs. With both Tier-1 matches ending in draws after rain ruined the first day’s play at the two BKSP grounds, Rangpur Division held their lead in the points table following the game against Dhaka Division, which keeps them unbeaten in the league, while Khulna Division and Sylhet Division stood at No. 3 and 4, respectively, following their own draw.Best batters
Barisal’s Salman Hossain celebrated his 50th first-class match by hitting his second century in the format, an innings worth 152 off 344 balls that included 15 fours and a six. That ton helped Barisal take a 261-run first-innings lead after Dhaka Metropolis were bowled out for just 87.Rajshahi’s young wicketkeeper Pritom Kumar struck his maiden first-class hundred as he made 117 against Chattogram. He struck 11 fours and a six in a 163-ball knock that helped revive Rajshahi in the second innings. He added 198 for the sixth wicket with the veteran Farhad Reza, who blasted five sixes and seven fours in his innings of 111 from 113 balls. For Chattogram, left-hand opener Pinak Ghosh made 102 with eight fours and two sixes to reach his fourth first-class hundred.Best bowlers
Left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam was adjudged Player of the Match for his ten-wicket haul in Rajshahi’s big win over Chattogram. Sunzamul finished with figures of 10 for 132 on his way to a sixth ten-for, which got him to joint-second position for most ten-fors in first-class cricket in Bangladesh. Abdur Razzak remains on top with ten such hauls. In the same match, offspinner Nayeem Hasan also took a five-for, and finished with nine in the match, while left-arm spinner Hasan Murad grabbed 5 for 96 in the second innings. For Khulna, pacer Al-Amin Hossain finished with figures of 9 for 116 against Sylhet.Best match
Rajshahi were bowled out for 194 in the first innings but retrieved the advantage quickly when they bowled Chattogram out for 119. However, Rajshahi slipped to trouble again in the second innings when they were 133 for 5 at one stage, before Pritom and Farhad combined to add 198 runs. They declared shortly after the pair was separated, but it was enough to bat Chattogram out of the game. Sunzamul took four wickets in the second innings as Chattogram were bowled out for 247.Points to ponder
Rangpur (28.89) and Dhaka Division (25.40), who are separated by 3.49 points, will be battling for the Tier-1 title in the final round starting Wednesday. The promotion battle should also be close, with Barisal (26.64) less than two points behind Chattogram, who are leading the Tier-2 table with 28.10 points.Players to watch
Pritom’s century bodes well for Rajshahi’s future as the once-mighty first-class team now languishes in the second tier. Meanwhile, Soumya Sarkar, who was recently dropped from the Bangladesh T20I team, made 57 for Khulna against Sylhet. Liton Das, however, managed only 24 for Rangpur against Dhaka Division.

83% duels won: Rangers titan was even better than Cerny vs Saints

Glasgow Rangers quickly bounced back from their Europa League disappointment on Thursday night with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over St Johnstone on Sunday night in the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues, playing at Ibrox for the second time in a week, secured all three points thanks to goals either side of half-time from Wolfsburg loanee Vaclav Cerny.

They were made to work for the win late on, however, as Ianis Hagi – on his return to action – was shown a red card for a studs-up challenge in midfield, but held on to keep a clean sheet.

One of the most impressive performers for Philippe Clement’s Rangers side on the night at Ibrox was, of course, the scorer of the two goals – Cerny.

Vaclav Cerny's performance in numbers

The Czechia international opened the scoring in the 34th minute of the match by brilliantly nutmegging the defender on the edge of the box before bending a left-footed finish into the far bottom corner.

That was a moment of individual brilliance from the right winger but the second goal came from the creativity and passing range of Hagi, who was later sent off, as the Romania international fizzed a superb pass into the forward, who controlled well and finished with his weaker right foot inside the box.

Cerny’s all-round play did still leave a little bit to be desired, however, as the winger completed one of his combined eight cross and long pass attempts.

He also lost five of his six duels against St Johnstone defenders, which shows that they found it too easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

His two fantastic goals more than made up for any other weaknesses in his performance on Sunday, but he was not the top performer for Rangers, as John Souttar excelled at the back.

John Souttar's performance in numbers

The Scotland international was colossal at the heart of the Rangers defence and dealt with almost everything that was thrown at him to help his side to a clean sheet.

John Souttar

In the first half, Souttar marshalled the back line brilliantly and won 100% of his ground duels before he had to deal with the pace of Adama Sidibeh off the bench in the second half.

The speedy St Johnstone substitute was no match for the former Hearts star, however, as he failed to beat the Scotsman in any foot races, with the centre-back maintaining his 100% ground duel success rate.

As you can see in the table above, Souttar won 83% of his duels in total during the game and earned himself a Sofascore rating of 7.7 for his superb defensive display.

The central defender also completed 91% of his attempted passes and created one chance for his teammates, which shows that he was composed and reliable in possession for the Light Blues.

Overall, the Scottish titan was crucial to Rangers’ play out of possession to provide a platform for the attackers and enjoyed a terrific all-round performance, which is why he was even better than Cerny – who struggled at times aside from his goals.
